Shaun died after suffering a suspected allergic reaction to tablets.
The promising rugby player developed breathing difficulties and collapsed after taking the pills.
His family said his death had left a "great hole" in the lives and have declined to name the acne treatment until medical tests are completed.
Acne medication does warn of the dangers of potential allergic respiratory tract and skin reactions, but deaths are described as very rare.
An inquest has been adjourned to await further investigations into his death, which happened on 21 October.
His father Graeme Jones said: "It is unbelievable. He was a strong, fit lad and was loved by everyone.
"He was popular with the girls and had a couple of spots, so the doctor gave him some antibiotic acne tablets. A lot of his friends are taking them.
"It was the first time he'd taken them and he developed breathing difficulties.

im realy sorry that i didnt get to say goodbye before i moved and that i couldn make it back for your funeral. When Michael asked me if i rememberd you, then i saw all the bebo sights and i was just praying it was natural rather than a murder not that you deserved either. You were one of the nicest guys round the school and if evry guy in the world was like you then wouldnt this be an amazing world..
i also tried to make it back last week for the run they oeganised for you but sadly i could not make it and i was so upset about it..
i realy hope they are taking care of you up there and now you have a famous neighbour up there with you showing heaven not just trouble comes out of Rhyd.

Hello Shaun. How is it going up there in spirit land ? missing you so much, our banter and laughter, things like off Dodgeball ( Its time to end this square dance ) and L for Love, and she must be a lesbo etc...it had us in laughter all day.
Sadly you are not here to share the laughter anymore.

Hello Shaun. I was out walking the dogs over Billy's today. I took a pen & notepad and wrote a poem for you. Its not great, its my first go.
A poem for Shaun.....Land Of Dreams.....
It was our world
A chance for a father to be a boy again
and for a boy who wanted to be a man
long summer days making dens to hide
a log fire alight on the riverside
listerning to a radio long into the night
a chance to tell stories of years gone by
a chance to say to you son things will be allright
a mother awaiting for our safe return
our laughter never ended
these are the memories that I hold
It was our world.
